| friend, or foe? why did they feel the need to post this non-local story, over many others? Immigration detention falls short of standards - Quote :
- LOS ANGELES - Immigrant advocates say the federal government has failed to meet its own standards for detaining immigrants, making it difficult for immigrants to defend themselves in court and fight to remain in the country.
A report released Tuesday says detainees face limited access to phones, mail and law libraries in violation of federal standards.
The study by attorneys from the National Immigration Law Center and formerly from the American Civil Liberties Union is based on inspection reports by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other reviewers between 2001 and 2005.
Dora Schriro, special adviser to the Homeland Security Secretary on detention and removal, says the study is outdated since the government has revamped its detention standards and inspection procedures. http://www.accessnorthga.com/detail.php?n=222110

| Who knows? It was like the article The Times of Gainesville did on our April 15 tea party where they felt compelled to feature another article about a counter-protest--not in Georgia but in some other state! I, for one, think they acted "stupidly!" | |

| Because Gainesville is home to many immigrants, I suppose.
Note that the article doesn't say "illegal" immigrants. I cannot figure out who we are supposed to be shedding a tear for here....
The requirements for being a citizen need to be redefined. If you're mother and father sneak across the border and give birth to you here, you should not be a citizen.
Someone convince me otherwise. I'm willing to think more about this....but right now, I think if you're parents aren't Americans AND they are here illegally, I don't care if you are born under the Liberty Bell....you should not automatically be an American citizen.

| When the country first started, and everybody (other than the Indians who were already here) came from another country, it made sense to have a law that gave you citizenship automatically when you were born here. But, to award citizenship to a child because her mother was here illegally for the birth, that's just a bad incentive.
And I'm pretty sure that a US citizen baby is immediately eligible for Medicaid. So we pay for Mom's health care through the uncompensated emergency room visit, and we pay for baby's care through government programs.

| Groups prepare for more immigration enforcement in Gwinnet - Quote :
- ATLANTA - Immigrant rights groups are taking measures to prepare for the implementation in Gwinnett County of a program they say will lead to racial profiling by allowing the sheriff's department to enforce federal immigration laws.
Efforts include educating people about their rights, pushing for anti-racial profiling legislation and setting up a legal defense fund for people detained.
The program, called 287(g) after the section of immigration law that governs it, trains designated state and local officers in immigration law enforcement and enables them to identify and detain illegal immigrants.
Critics have long said the program, which took effect in 1996 but was little used until the last few years, leads to racial profiling. http://www.accessnorthga.com/detail.php?n=222279&c=10because somebody un-name has said it for a long time, doesn't necessarily make to true. a subtle insert of their 'view' I think.

| That's a mighty interesting title there.
Shouldn't they be arresting the fugitive immigrants too?
